Tamarillos with Spiced Fruit Salad

Tamarillos with spiced fruit salad

If tamarillos are not in season you can use frozen or fresh berries or red plums.

125 grams brown sugar
200 grams of mixed dried fruit of your choice – sliced apricots, currants, raisins, figs etc
(I always like to include some finely chopped crystallised ginger)
Grated zest and juice of 1 orange
125 ml red wine
1 cinnamon stick
¼ tsp ground all spice
500 grams peeled and sliced tamarillos (or other fruit such as thawed frozen or fresh berries or red plums)

Combine sugar, dried fruit, ginger (if using) orange zest and juice, wine, cinnamon, and all spice in a saucepan and bring to the boil.

Reduce heat and simmer 3 minutes.  Remove from sauce pan and allow to cool.  Stir in tamarillos and chill.

Serve fruit with vanilla ice cream or crumbled meringues.

If you don’t use all the fruit this is certainly one dish which tastes even better by the next day!
